Furzeen is an Associate Lecturer in English Language at the University of Derby. She has recently completed her doctoral research at Aston University in Applied Linguistics, and explored how students constructed cultural identities during reading in the Secondary English classroom. Her interests lie in understanding the role of classroom discourse in how students draw on cultural and experiential knowledge during the exploration of literature, using a cognitive linguistics framework, Text World Theory, to examine how such different lenses are used to generate novel insights. She have made contributions in peer-reviewed journals such as English in Education, as well as NATE’s Teaching English magazine and have co-edited a book Teaching English Language and Literature 16-19 (forthcoming) which provides case studies of innovative classroom practices arguing for an integrated approach to studying Language and Literature.
